The University of the Philippines Los Baños has assured its constituents that they have been implementing various measures to ensure the safety of the students, the administration said in a statement.
On October 15, a female student of the University was raped by a tricycle driver who picked her up in Brgy. Maahas. On October 17, the suspect, Jose Montecillo, has been arrested.
“Let this incident be a rallying call for all concerned authorities to ensure that every nook and cranny of Los Baños and neighboring communities is rid of potential offenders and criminals who prey on our students and the general public. Most importantly, let this be a demand for justice to be served speedily for the victim,” its statement read.
The University said that the measures that they have implemented include the reinforcement of the University Police Force (UPF), Community Support Brigade (CSB), and blue guards; and the implementation of UPLB Housing Office’s (UHO) dorm loop service.
“Further, we have been strictly following a policy that holding of student activities should not go beyond 10 pm so that our students can go home early,” it continued.
Various student groups have also condemned the incident in an indignation rally last October 17, the same day Montecillo was arrested.
Meanwhile, ABS-CBN Southern Tagalog reported on October 22 that personnel from the Philippine National Police have been stationed at the police outpost at the entrance of IPB Road in Barangay Tuntungin-Putho. [P]
