Incoming USC conducts first CSL

The incoming UPLB University Student Council (USC) headed its first Council of Student Leaders (CSL) meeting together with the incumbent USC Officials on Thursday, May 7.

Initially intended to be held on Makiling Ballroom Hall, the CSL was then held on the first floor of the Student Union Building.

The sudden change of venue was because of some confusion with the building’s administrative personnel.

“Na-approve naman ‘yung letter para sa Makiling Ballroom Hall, kaya lang nakalimutan lang ‘ata ng janitor na magkakaroon ng activity,” said Ian Barte, incumbent USC Councilor, and Head of USC’s Logistics Committee.

Attended by heads of several organizations, the CSL Meeting focused on two agenda: the Freshman Registration Assistance, and the Save our Schools campaign.

The Freshman Registration Assistance was discussed by Ronald Gem Celestial, USC Chairperson-Elect for the academic year 2015-2016.

Celstial said that the USC will open sponsorship to the organizations for the registration assistance to be implemented. Sponsorship packages will be offered to organizations who would want to help, volunteer, and take part in the activity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the registration assistance were also discussed and answered by Celestial.

When asked if one can still volunteer despite not being affiliated with any organization, the USC chair-elect answered, “Syempre oo, everyone is encouraged to volunteer, may org[anization] ka man o wala, welcome na welcome tayo na magvolunteer sa freshman reg[istration] assistance.’ (Of course yes, everyone is encouraged to volunteer, may you be a member of an organization or not, everyone is welcome to volunteer for the freshman registration assistance.)

The final regular agenda for the CSL Meeting was about the Save our Schools Campaign which was presented by Yvann Curtis Zuñiga, incumbent USC Councilor, and USC Vice-Chairperson-Elect for the academic year 2015-2016.

Zuñiga’s discussion of the agendum started with a backgrounder about the Save Our Schools Campaign.

“That is why kinakampanya natin itong Save our Schools Campaign, dahil maliban pa sa salat na salat na ‘yung mga tao sa Mindanao, na malaki talaga ‘yung kakulangan [sa] kanila; na papasukin ’yung mga anak nila, barely na kinakaya nila,” said Zuñiga about the USC’s campaigning of the Save Our Schools Campaign.

(We are campaigning Save Our Schools Campaign because aside from the fact that people in Mindanao are experiencing poverty, they are faced with the challenge of sending their children to school.)

Zuñiga told that the USC already identified a beneficiary school, the Alternative Learning Center for Agricultural Development in Caraga region. The beneficiary will receive the collected donations which consist of school supplies collected from the activities of USC such as the Feb Fair.

He also added that the freshman registration assistance will also be maximized for greater collection of donations for the beneficiary in Mindanao.
